Listen to the lady, pals.

This! Absolutely this!
If you’re excited about the new direction for Batgirl, please bring this code in to your LCS. The internet enthusiasm has been overwhelming and beautiful, but the best way to show DC you want books like this is to make sure your retailers know that they have people to buy it in time for them to place a big order.

Captain Marble or The Christmas Carol

Captain Marvel is amazing, and this smaller piece is only an attempt at capturing her badassery. Inspired by the ass-kicking dinosaur-punching cover art for Captain Marvel #1 by David Lopez and the great story-telling of kellysue. It will also be displayed at Fantastic Comics~!

Also, if anyone is serious about building that Captain Marvel chapel, let’s talk.

Technical thingies:

- 20 inches x 13 inches

- The buttons are marbles! She’s Captain Marble! I regret nothing.

- Since she is very primary-colory, choosing the background color/texture was very difficult and stressing. So I made it snow. I think my Russian blood is subconsciously influencing my aesthetic choices.

- Not clear in the picture, but the “rays” are silver whereas her outline/internal lines are patina’d black.

- About 74 separate pieces + 6 marbles

Once again, our customer Ouliana is making AMAZING comic book stained glass!

If you haven’t already seen pictures of her first Captain Marvel piece and her Hawkguy piece, check them out. It’s a privilege to have them in our store!

kateordie:

Prepare yourselves appropriately, because this is happening.

Batgirl is getting a relaunch by Cameron Stewart, Brenden Fletcher and Babs Freakin’ Tarr. You know, your actual favourite artist who drew the Bosozoku Sailor Scouts? SHE’S DRAWING BATGIRL. I’ll calm down… eventually?!

More info at MTV!

HELLS YES!

I adore Gail Simone and her run has been great. I will eternally bless her for giving us Alysia!

That said, it’s great to see this book step out of the darkness DC as a whole has been mired in the past few years. I adore the new costume, Babs Tarr is KILLING IT on the art in general, and everything Cameron Stewart and Brendon Fletcher have said sounds crazy exciting. This could be EXACTLY what DC needs!

Hmm, haven’t done one of these in a while. But here we go, my picks of the week:

  • Madame Frankenstein #3: Vincent’s coaching session with “Gail” is interrupted by Henry and a slew of flashbacks that show just why Vincent feels so put upon and just how little he figured into Courtney’s life. It’s a joy to watch Jamie S. Rich and Megan Levens’ feminist reworking of Frankenstein unfold!
  • Avatar the Last Airbender - The Rift Part 2: Toph must confront her estranged father, Aang must find a way to connect with Avatar Yangchen, Sokka and Katara must defeat the Rough Rhinos, and one man must defend his cabbages!
  • Miles Morales: The Ultimate Spider-Man #3: Miles tries to share his biggest secret with Katie (despite Ganke’s advice) and to figure out how Peter Parker was in his room. Both tasks are interrupted by the news that Norman Osborn is back! (Art and color team davidmarquez and Justin Ponsor are killing it this issue!)
  • Thor God of Thunder #24: In the wake of the destruction of Broxton the Asgardians must make hard decisions about their influence on the town. It looks like Roxxon has won the day, but Roz Solomon isn’t giving up so easily. (Bonus love for the She-Hulk cameo and for Agustin Alessio’s incredible art!)
  • Honorable mention goes to The Woods and Black Widow this week.

-Juliette

P.S. If you want my weekly recommendations when I don’t have time to do the tumblr thing, head to twitter and follow LCSValkyries for Wednesday new comics recs from me and a whole slew of other awesome women working in comic shops around the world!

Here’s a better look at my character designs to the newly announced ODY-C with Matt Fraction   - coming late sumer/early fall from Image Comics

For those of you who haven’t yet heard, Matt Fraction and Christian Ward are collaborating on a new title called ODY-C. The book is a genderbent, scifi retelling of the Odyssey, so it’s basically a combination of some of my favorite things made by people whose work I love! It iis supposed to drop in November and it’s one of the titles starting this year that I am the most excited to read.

Just look at these incredible character designs! Get excited friends and customers, because this is going to be an incredible, GORGEOUS thing!

My super fly new shirt just arrived in the mail!
I think if our store had a primary philosophy it would be this one. The comics community has a bad habit of falling into patterns of gatekeeping and exclusion, which is why I think it’s vitally important that to represent initiatives like this and #WeAreComics. I already loved Jordie Bellaire for being an incredibly talented colorist (who apparently can work on a million books and never sleep because she’s magical) but I love her even more for producing these shirts. And of course Steven Finch is responsible for most of the lettering of my favorite comic, so of course I decided to take a picture blocking all the letters on my Saga poster. Well done me.
Check out Jordie’s interview about how the Comics Are For Everybody initiative came about over on CBR.

Continue reading Princess Princess here! »

As you know I’ve been working hard on redrawing Princess Princess, and I’m super excited to finally share the finished product with you guys! Check it out if you like your princess romances in full colour.

I’m currently investigating printing options, so if you’re interested in that please stay tuned!

Princess Princess is a wonderful all ages story about princesses rescuing each other, finding their places in the world, and finding love. It’s one part Adventure Time (mostly Bubbline) and two parts Princeless. I can’t wait for it to be in print so we can get physical copies of this sweet little story into the store, but for now please give it a read online.

The folks at Chapel Hill Comics sure know what’s up! (Hi, from a CA Valkyrie.)
Issue #1 of Lumberjanes was so excellent I can barely handle describing it. I’ve been going crazy waiting for #2 to come out, but luckily the wait is almost over. Issue #2 of Lumberjanes is out this coming Wednesday the 14th!

We had an incredible Free Comic Book Day at Fantastic Comics! Massive crowds, loads of happy people, many visiting doggy friends, and, my personal favorite, some awesome folks in cosplay. Here are some of the pictures we got of the two of us Valkyries in our costumes and some of our friends and customers as well.

I may or may not have time to do my picks of the week, but I have a good excuse… FREE COMIC BOOK DAY!
What’s Free Comic Book Day you ask? It’s one day a year when comic book publishers produce free single issues and local comic shops give them away for free! It’s an international event with most stores making a big celebration out of the day. Check out your local store to see what they’ve got planned!
Fantastic Comics is going to have sales on books, figures, shirts, back issues, and more. We also encourage cosplayers to stop by for photo ops. If you’re in the area please stop by for free comics and to help us celebrate three years in downtown Berkeley!

I am Juliette. I am 28, cis female, queer, white, American, and I am comics.
I’ve been a comics reader my entire life. As a young child I read Asterix & Obelix to practice my German. In elementary school I staged an anti-censorship protest over the Elfquest hardcovers my friends and I smuggled into class. As a teenager I discovered the X-Men when I was trying to figure out my own identity. In my early twenties I fell headfirst into Fables and Buffy Season 8. Now I am a member of the Carol Corps, a devotee of books like Saga, Rat Queens, and Sex Criminals, a fangirl for Batwoman and Ultimate Spider-Man, an avid reader of over forty monthly titles, and a proud Valkyrie. I work in my LCS, Fantastic Comics, and nothing makes me happier than welcoming the beautifully diverse range of people I meet at the store into the comic book worlds I love.
I am a feminist. I believe in intersectionality. I applaud respect and representation of diverse characters. I reject fandom gatekeeping.
I am comics.

Oooh, Sexual Gary!

Image Comics and team SexCrims are officially trying to make my closet overcrowded and my bank account empty. I’m okay with this!

Let your LCS know asap if you want one of these excellent shirts made by one of the few companies a small comic shop can easily order women’s cuts from!
